Butt to quit as PCB chief

Even though he sees no immediate danger to his position, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt has made it clear that he will not hesitate to step down from his post if PCB chief patron President Asif Ali Zardari asks him to do so.

Rumors have been rife that the PCB chief patron Zardari has lost confidence in Butt's ability to head the cricket affairs and was contemplating a change of guard.

Butt, however, insisted that he had no knowledge from where these rumors were emanating.

"So far no one has told me or indicated to me that chief patron wants to change me," he stated.

"The chief patron appointed me and he has every right to remove me if he feels I am not doing a good job. But until I am the chairman of PCB I will continue to work the way I see fit. I am not going to be bothered by any criticism from anyone," he said. .

To add to the PCB chief's woes, the Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports Jamshed Dasti had also written to President Zardari outlining the reasons behind the call for Butt's immediate ouster.

Dasti again launched a verbal attack on Butt after a meeting in Islamabad, insisting that it was time for the PCB chief to go.

Dasti also accused that it was because of Butt's incompetence Pakistan had not lost the right to host 2011 World Cup matches.

But the PCB chairman refused to pay any heed to these allegations, saying President Zardari has the sole authority to question or remove him.

"I know that I am trying to do my best for Pakistan cricket in difficult circumstances. If the team has not done well in Australia it's performance should not be linked with the board," Butt said.
